Learn how to keep chickens

These courses are no longer available

Pocket Farm and chicken supplies specialists Handpecked Poultry have teamed up to offer chicken keeping course from this Spring.

Outside of the obvious eggs, chickens are a great addition to any smallholding or backyard providing everything from a ready supply of compost to a chance to win rosettes at the numerous shows around the country…it’s no wonder chicken keeping is becoming so popular.

The Hertfordshire-based courses will provide an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of chicken husbandry as well as the opportunity to increase your knowledge if you are a new keeper.

Each 2 hour session features both practical and theoretical aspects including:

– Handling chickens
– Why do you want chickens?
– Cost and savings
– Choosing the right number and breed
– Housing
– Creating the right environment
– Legal requirements
– Protecting against predators
– Feeding and treats
– Organic or non-organic?
– Types of bedding
– Common health issues and remedies
– Wing clipping (don’t worry, it’s not painful for them!)

There will also be a Q&A session for any more specific questions you may have.
