May 5th - 11th is national Hedgehog Awareness Week

Two hedgehogs

Hedgehog Awareness Week is an annual event that gives the dedicated people at organisations like our local hedgehog rescue, Herts Hogline, the chance to spread the word about the work they do. It also highlights the plight of our declining hedgehog population. If you’d like to support your local hedgehog population then visit www.hedgehoghogstreet.org for advice. There are also a number of ways you can support Herts Hogline’s work including:

Via social media

Follow @hertshogline on Twitter or search for Herts Hogline on Facebook. You can support their work by retweeting and encouraging your family and friends to like the Facebook page.

Spread the word

They give talks/presentations to local organisations such as the WI, Brownies, Cub Scouts, schools etc. They cover an area within 20 minutes of Stansted Airport, Essex (just off the M11 junction 8a/8). In return for these talks they ask for a minimum donation and also offer a selection of cards, key rings, picture books and hand puppets for sale. If you belong to a group within our catchment area or know of a group or school who would be interested in a talk/presentation email Lynne at help@hertshogline.com for more information.

They are also able to give talks to schools outside the catchment area via Skype.

Donate without giving cash

You can also support their work by purchasing your office supplies using this link. Each time you make a purchase they are given a commission on the sale. Follow the link, click on the ‘join now’ button and complete the form ensuring 111107 is in the last box called ‘reference’.

Buying from the blog store

If you make a purchase using any of the Amazon widgets in the margins of the blog they receive a commission for that sale. The blog can be found at http://thehedgehogshed.blogspot.co.uk

Buying from the Amazon wish list

There are items that Herts Hogline use all the time so they have created an Amazon wish list where you can purchase these essentials and have them delivered direct. If this is something you feel you can do then please contact them at help@hertshogline.com and they will supply you with an address. The link for the wish list is here.

Donations of food

They are always in need of cat or dog food and any they are unable to use is re-gifted to the Mutts in Distress or Animal Rescue Centre.

Fund raising

If you’d like to be more proactive then perhaps have a fund raising event. If you do decide to go ahead then just let them know so they can tell everyone about it on their Facebook page. All donations should be sent to Herts Hogline C/O POX 7716, Bishop’s Stortford, Herts, CM23 4XH and cheques made payable to Herts Hogline.

Helping other rescue centres

Last but not least remember if you’re outside the Herts Hogline catchment area you can still help hedgehogs. To discover a hedgehog carer near you search on the British Hedgehog Preservation Society website which has a list of carers nationwide.
